What Be In My Noggin’

Plenty I Think...

The end is near

Today I stumbled upon news that Bush (not President Bush, just Bush) lifted the ban on offshore drilling for both oil and natural gas.  It comes as no surprise really,  maybe I gave the man more credit than he deserves.  After all we are in an endless debacal in the middle east, oil prices continue to climb and even the Evil Republic can see that Americans are actually looking for change in how things are done in this country.  But I thought that maybe even Bush would try his best to not rattle the cage as he begins his exit from D.C.  I was wrong. And it certainly isn't the first time for me being wrong.  I guess that could be the small thing that makes Bushy and I similar.  But then again it makes us different, I admit defeat and wrongness if in fact I am defeated.

Thankfully I think most people, even the less intelligent ones can see that this can't solve the problem of high gas prices. It is symbolic gesture as most news sources point out.  And while the soon to be jobless Bush thinks this is the best way for "us" as a country to adapt and attack high prices in fuel and food. I think there are better ways.  I for one can't see the price of automobile gas ever going south of $4 a gallon again. Ever.  But I can adapt.  Evolve.  To quote Bruce Lee, "be like water my friend"...  Asking Bush to be like water is silly, it will never happen.  I just hope that as we enter this new era of changes and obstacles more of us can adapt and evolve.

Stick with me here.  When I was a younger man than I am now, I wanted to be a Science teacher. Ecology was a particular passion of mine, I blame a crazy bearded giant for this.  It was a wonderful seed that this giant man planted in my little developing mind: Be good to the Earth, and it will be good to you. (Mainly you will still have an Earth/Home to live in) In time I drifted away from school and the classes I needed to take to actually become a teacher.  But I tried my best to be mindful of my actions when it came to taking care of the planet we have been given. As we get older sometimes we forget what we set out to do.  We forget and we also can get lazy.  But thankfully something often comes along that can scare the shit out of us and reminded of what we wanted to be or become.

When the price of fuel began to rise I got scared. Not,  pee my pants scared, but worried if I could afford spending 40 plus bucks a week to get around Los Angeles.  Then I remember my super powers!  Like the power to choose.  I chose to limit the money I spent on gas by limiting the amount of time I spent driving places.  I have chosen to use the power of my brain to think about what I need to get done with my car: grocery, post office etc. and go to all of those places in one trip.  I made the choice to use my health and good fortune of having legs.  Legs that could peddle my bike around town therefore getting exercise while limiting the use of my car. (One tank of fuel lasted a month).  And just as important I choose to nag/remind/talk to people when I thought they could go about doing things differently.  I busted my girl (in a loving way) when she wanted to drive 3 blocks to Trader Joes to get groceries.  I praised the power of mass transit, honestly where else can you meet interesting (crazy) people while making a smaller ecological foot print...

So if by some act of God you choose to read this blog. All 3 of you...then I challenge you to do something that you think is right and true.  Bush really thinks that drilling in ANWAR and offshore can solve our problems. Hopefully you choose to make the right changes in your life that in turn can make the people in "power" choose to actually listen to us as a people.  Ride a bike, walk to the movie theater, grown a small garden, leave your lawn be for 2 weeks before mowing it. Something, anything to keep the end of the world from being nye.  One thing is certain, Bush and his time at the top of the mountain is thankfully very near.
